In 1997, a
fledgling project titled The
Sleeping Pill began as an
experiment that would foster the germination
of ideas that would later develop into Small
Dot Complex. In 2001, after purchasing some
music software, Small Dot Complex
would come to fruition.
Originally taking cues from goth, industrial, ambient, and movie scores, the early output of SDC was an attempt to create music of mood rather than adhere to any strict sense of structure. Today SDC maintains these principles, but also experiments with song structure and simple melodies.
At its heart, SDC will
always be a project of experimentation bent
on breaking with conventions. The latest
album, Wyrdlings, is the perfect
melding of experimentation, simple melody,
mood, and atmosphere. Combining musical
influences old and new, Wyrdlings
attempts to flood the listener with aural
stimuli intended to induce the listener to
think about how the music affects them. The
interaction from the listener is critical to
the enjoyment of the entire catalog from
Small Dot Complex.
